Keanu Reeves annual Bill & Ted 3 update is, like, totally here dude!

There’s been talk of a potential third outing for San Dimas’ most bodacious rockers for years. Last we heard from Keanu Reeves, the movie was still languishing in development, but getting “closer (opens in new tab)” to entering production. Twelve months on, and it looks as if Bill & Ted 3 is in the same place. “That’s still true – we’re closer and we’re not closer,” Reeves tells IGN (opens in new tab). “We’re expecting another draft and hopefully we’ll get closer.”

“We’re just trying to get the script together” he adds. “We’re trying to get the story right. We’re working with this studio so we have a little bit of support, in a sense of like if the material comes through we’ll try and make this picture. We’re really just still trying to get the story right.”

Reeves confirms that the story is one that’s been kicking around for a while (opens in new tab): Bill and Ted feel the pressure when they’re tasked with writing the perfect song to bring peace and harmony to mankind. “And we go on this expedition, go into the future to find out if we wrote the song,” Reeves said back in 2012 (opens in new tab), “and one future ‘us’ refuses to tell us, and another future ‘us’ blames us for their lives because we didn’t write the song, so they’re living this terrible life. In one version we’re in jail; in another we’re at some kind of highway motel and they hate us.”

It’s a great concept that sounds like just the sort of situation Bill and Ted would make into another amusing caper. With both Reeves and Alex Winter (opens in new tab) eager to return, and a ton of support from the fan community, it’s likely just a matter of ironing out the screenplay. So folks, looks like we might be playing the waiting game a little while longer.
