Director Marc Webb talks about his approach to Spider-Man

In conversation with the LA Times, The Amazing Spider-Man director Marc Webb said he feels it’s necessary to bring the hero up-to-date as geek has become chic.

“The idea of what a nerd is has changed in 40 or 50 years. Nerds are running the world” declares Webb.

Taking the characters in new Spidey Andrew Garfield’s previous film The Social Network as a guide he hopes to refine Peter Parker’s “outsider” qualities in a “contemporary context”.

From the sounds of it we’re likely to get an insight in the character’s psychology as well as the superhero’s back story.

The director also talks about the action in the film being more “physically grounded” and “convincing and real”, so that Spider-Man can “swing in a way that wasn’t computer generated”.

The Amazing Spider-Man is set to hit screens on 4 July 2012.
