Destiny conspiracy theory suggests something big coming September 20

As the Destiny (opens in new tab) community is keenly aware, update 2.2 went live on Tuesday, providing Bungie’s space opera some much-needed new content. But did it also provide context for a clue about the future of Destiny in 2016? That’s what players are trying to figure out right now, and their theories just might make you circle September 20 on your calendars, even if we don’t yet know why.

Let me break the mystery down for you. As anyone who’s played Destiny can tell you, this is a game starring guns and, occasionally, the Guardians who wield them. If you want to learn more about a particular weapon or character, you need to complete challenges or collect items, such as Dead Ghosts. The April 12 update added such an item to an area called the Prison of Elders, and just 17 minutes after it went live, a Reddit user by the name of RezylAzzir posted a guide to collecting it.

Even with the best internet connection and highest level of skill, being able to download the update, complete Prison of Elders, find the new Dead Ghost, and post about it on Reddit in that amount of time seemed fishy. Even more suspicious: the Dead Ghost unlocked lore about an in-universe character named… Rezyl Azzir (opens in new tab).

As people began to ask more and more questions, RezylAzzir (the Redditor) took down their post and went quiet. Fortunately for conspiracy theorists, they left behind another clue (opens in new tab). In the thread discussing the new Dead Ghost, RezylAzzir wrote, “Vegisima die mensis noni. ILLUD est venturus. Per Audacia ad astra.” Or, translated from Latin: “The twentieth day of the ninth month. IT is coming. Forward, to the stars.”

September has been a big month for Destiny. It was the month the vanilla version of the game launched, as well as the month that its most significant expansion, The Taken King, launched. We also know that there’s another large expansion due this year (opens in new tab). Could September 20 be its tentative release date? It’d be easy to dismiss this as an elaborate troll by someone wanting to get fans’ hopes up for new content, but RezylAzzir’s information about the new Dead Ghost was accurate, so it stands to reason they know something we don’t.

The Destiny subreddit is buzzing with theories, and I don’t know about you, but I’ve got the tingles.
